How Has Technology Impacted Writing?
As society has been increasingly modernized due to advancements and newfound accessibility of technology, the world as we know it is always shifting and changing. I have the capability to send a text message within a matter of seconds to talk to someone right next to me or a thousand miles away, and can share within moments how my life is going through a post on social media. Our society now is as efficient as it has ever been before, for we can convey messages and communicate with each other within a blink of an eye. The ability I have now to Snapchat a friend might change tomorrow, however, and become something grander, but the concept of words will not.
Whether typed or handwritten, the power of words aren't diminished through the medium. I have written both some of my favorite things on a computer, but also my best work with a pencil and paper. As different technology comes and goes, words prove to be timeless. Words prove to carry substantial meaning whether present in pixels or created by lead. But as technology has shown to make many things far more efficient and logical, so has the rate at which publicity and work can be established, produced, and shared. Have you ever tried to write and your hand grew so tired you had to stop? Has your hand ever gotten that sore typing? Perhaps you wrote or thought something you're proud to share and you want to tell a friend. Would a letter or text get to them faster? Maybe you want to self-promote and bring awareness to something you find important. Would creating an Instagram immediately and posting information after following a bunch of people seem more logical, or having to take the time to make, print, hand out, and hang up flyers? The speed at which ideas can be shared has grown exponentially and should be utilized to its full potential. This idea of self-promotion has personally inspired me to create my own Instagram to bring light to my work. As many of my current pieces are extraordinarily personal and unfinished, I plan to use the account to its full potential once my book is further in motion and I feel even more comfortable putting myself out there. For now, however, I hope to increase my followers steadily and share the words I hold so dear to my heart.
